项目摘要

本研究は、都市において「性(sex/gender)」の規範を逸脱する人々の表象の検討を通じて王政復古期イギリス文学における「男性性」再考を試みるものであり、本年度は王政復古期演劇を特徴づける代表的キャラクターの一人である「洒落者(fop)」の考察を行った。まず、「洒落者」に関する基本的論考(Susan StavesやAndrew P.Williams)から、当該時期の舞台における「洒落者」をリストアップして、その表象を確認した。「洒落者」は、その名の通り、華美な服飾と洗練された振る舞いという「外面」に異常なまでのこだわりを持つだけでなく、繊細な感受性という「内面」まで「女性的な(effeminate)」特質を持つ人物である。それゆえ、直接に「同性愛者」と同定されることはなくとも、18世紀「同性愛サブカルチャー」の勃興と結びつけて近年ジェンダー研究の分野において論じられてきた(たとえば、Randolph Trumbach、Laurence SenelickやGeorge E.Haggertyによる研究)。しかし、最新の研究(代表はPhilip CarterやMark S.Dawson)が示すように、いわゆる古き良き時代の「男性性」を欠いた「洒落者」は当初激しい諷刺の的となっていたが、「洗練(politeness)」が新しい時代の「男性性」を特徴づけるにあたり、「ジェントルマン」を文化的に構築する外面的要素もまた重視され、「洒落者」に対する社会的反応も微妙に変化を遂げてきていることがわかった。なお、この「洒落者」表象は、王政復古演劇をはるかに越えてColley CibberやDavid GarrickやSamuel Footeなど18世紀演劇全般にも密接に関わり、その系譜は18世紀後半の「[イタリア流]伊達男(macaroni)」等々にまでつながるため、今後も継続的に研究を進めていきたいと考えている。

This study is aimed at exploring the concept of "sex/gender" in urban areas, re-examining "masculinity" in literature during the period of Wang Zheng's restoration, and exploring "fop" as a representative of Wang Zheng's drama during the period of Wang Zheng's restoration.
