今年度は、昨年度に引き続き『マヌ・スムリティ(Manu)』の王権論の構造を解明するための資料として『マハーバーラタ(MBh)』を取り扱った。MBhの「王権論の章」を含む第12巻は、後代の付加部分とされるが、そこに記述される王権論はManuなに代表されるダルマ文献や『実理論』の記述と大差はないことが明らかである。また、第2巻と第15巻にもまとまって王権論が説かれており、その両者の記述を比較検討した。重要な点は、第2巻で説いた王権論を何故第12巻で王権論を再説する必要があったのかということである。第2巻の記述は素朴に過ぎ、第12巻が成立した当時の時代の要請には応えきれなかったのではないかと推測する。また、Manuに至る前段階としてダルマスートラの記述を検討すると、その目的は「ヴァルナとアーシュラマのダルマ」の解説ではあるが、実際は「家住期」の「バラモン」の生活規定の記述に終始している。そこにおいて王の職務はあたかも「付け足し」のように説かれているに過ぎない。これがManuにいたって全体の3割を占めるようになるのは不自然である。しかし、Manu8,9章に非常に素朴な形の王権論が記述されていることは、これまで見過ごされてきた。第7章全体と、8,9章の大部分を除いて、上述の素朴な王権論をオリジナルなものと考えればManu全体の構造が理解しやすくなるのである。また、Manuの浩瀚な王権論を整理する形で次代の『ヤージュニャヴァルキヤ法典』が編纂されたのであろう。本研究では以上のような知見を得ることができた。これに基づいてダルマ文献全体を視野に入れて王権論の構造とその社会的背景を解明したいと考えている。
