1,ニューヨーク・パブリック・ライブラリーにて,シオドア・ウォレスおよびロバート・ブルームの一次資料を収集。2,メトロポリタン美術館(ニューヨーク)にて,ブルームの滞日作《飴屋》を実見,調査。3,伊香保にて,ウォレスとブルームが描いた作品のモティーフを実見,当時の地図を閲覧。4,昨年度より収集した資料をもとに,ウォレス,ブルームの滞日作品の分析。ウォレスに関しては,滞日中の活動が徐々に明らかになってきた。まず日本側の資料より,第1回目の来日時には,日本画団体・東洋絵画会と関係を結び,同会主催の展覧会を閲覧していることがわかった。またウォレス自身の記録より,京都の日本画家・鈴木百年との交流も明らかとなった。したがって,ウォレスと日本人画家との交流については,黒田清輝ら白馬会系の洋画家だけではなく,日本画家との関係も重視すべきであろう。さらに滞日作品を分析するうちに,写真を参考にしたと思われる作品が数点あることが確認できた。当初,ロバート・ブルームは,エドウィン・アーノルドの『ジャポニカ』の挿絵を描くために来日した。今回,ニューヨーク・パブリック・ライブラリーで,アーノルドが滞日中にブルームに送った書簡をはじめとする,「アーノルド・ペーパー」を閲覧できたことは,ブルームの日本での足跡をたどる上で,重要な手がかりとなった。ブルームの日本での活動については,ほとんど資料がないが,同図書館の資料から,来日前後のアメリカ美術界におけるブルームの評価を把握することができた。
