项目摘要

研究の総括戦国期の拠点城郭を中心にした踏査を行い、基本的な城郭構造を読みとるとともに城郭と城下との連関について概念整理を行った。さらに日本との比較研究のため中国の都城・城郭遺跡の踏査を実施した。昨年度までの研究成果と合わせ総括すると、日本における16世紀後半段階の城郭・城下の形成を一体的な城下町の形成として把握した場合、従来指摘されてきたような織豊系城郭が近世城郭になった、と城郭部を指標として捉えるだけでは不充分なことを明らかにすることができた。この問題は中世から近世への転換を城郭・城下遺跡からどのように評価するか、という課題に直結する。そこで都市壁を早い段階から備え、都市民の存在を前提とした中国の城郭のあり方と比較すると、日本の近世城下町成立に2つの段階を設定できる。第1の段階は、城郭部の大名の居所を中心とした求心構造が成立した段階。第2段階はそうした城郭部で成立した求心構造が、城下部まで貫徹した段階である。この差が、織豊系城郭と近世城郭の差異に他ならない。このことは別言すれば近世的身分刑の成立と照応したものであり、近世的身分制の成立が城下の都市住民が参加して防御した総構えの消失を招くという双方向的な構造変化を達成させたと結論できる。これこそが都市囲郭をもたない時本型近世城下町成立のプロセスであった。
