本年度はまず、既に着手し部分的に執筆していた博士論文を今回助成された研究とあわせてまとめ完成させたことが大きな成果である。本博論第二部となったのが、鏡花の中期の作『草迷宮』を屏風画のモチーフから考察していく「『草迷宮』における歌絵の趣向」である。冒頭の「杜若咲く八つ橋」と「月の武蔵野」という表現に着目し、これらが特に江戸時代に好んで用いられた伝統的な意匠であることをもとに検討、鏡花の意図が実は同作品そのものを一枚の「見立て絵」となすことにあった点を指摘するもので、既に一部執筆に着手していたが、今回の助成により改めて屏風画の意匠であり歌絵である武蔵野図の由来を調査、東京国立博物館、サントリー美術館、出光美術館所蔵の該当作品の調査及び写真フィルム借出が可能となった。本稿は近代日本文学会関西支部大会で口頭発表(2000・11・4)の後『近世と近代の通廊』(2001・2、双文社出版)に収録された。次に、博論第三部となったのが「鏡花文学における自然と意匠の背景」である。これも一部着手していたが、今回の助成により『光琳派画集』や雑誌「新小説」流行欄の調査等を行った。博論執筆に当たり草花文様に焦点を絞り、明治後期の園芸(特に前田曙山の活動)と植物採集流行の調査、アール・ヌーボー、モリスの意匠の輸入状況、それらの影響下に岡田三郎助の描いた『草迷宮』口絵の検討を行い、『草迷宮』の幻想的な世界がこうした同時代の嗜好上にあったことを「草」を通じて指摘した。本稿は博論提出後改めて加筆修正し「神戸大学文学部紀要」28号に発表した(2001・3刊行予定)。現在、上記博論は既に審査に合格、平成13年3月、博士号取得予定である。平成13年度に向けては、鏡花の芸術家小説『菊あはせ』を分析中。また、上記博論を補完するべく、さらに詳細に鏡花文学の意匠と自然観の背景分析を進めていく予定。
