The primary aim of our project is to understand the relationship of Holocene climate, vegetation and human societies in monsoonal Central Asia by comparing target-oriented climate model simulations with proxy derived vegetation and climate reconstructions. The reconstructed climate trend is qualitatively in good agreement with the climate modelling results. Nevertheless, both methods show no clear large-scale but rather a sub-regionally different climate trend, revealing asynchronous moisture changes in different sub-regions of monsoonal Central Asia. Climate modelling results show on a large scale a weak influence of vegetation changes on Holocene climate change, but regionally the vegetation feedback can be strong. Furthermore, we demonstrated that vegetation changes in monsoonal Asia have an effect on climate in North Africa and the Middle East suggesting strong teleconnections. In the next phase of this project we want to figure out, which mechanisms determine the differences in Holocene climate trend/variability in the sub-monsoon regions and how the climate and vegetation change in monsoonal Central Asia is affected by teleconnections.
