Agricultural food production in the North China Plain is characterised by high level production intensities, crop rotations and yields. Sustainability has not been taken into account in the development of Chinas agriculture that has been mainly focused on raising productivity in order to meet the needs of a growing population with rising living standards. As a consequence, agricultural production in China entails serious environmental problems like reduced water availability, air and water pollution, and soil degradation.
