認識と言語の両レベルの視点からアイロニーの統合的理論を打ち立て、それをテコに、アイロニーを取り巻く関連領域全体の研究分野を切り開く必要があるという観点に基づき、次の3点から研究を実施してきた。第一に、「認識と言語の両レベル」の視点からアイロニーの統合理論を完成させること。第二に、日本語のアイロニー関連語彙の詳細な研究を行い、欠如語彙の性格を明らかにすること。第三に、英語・中国語・韓国語で日本語と同様の調査を実施し、アイロニー関連語彙に関して、その普遍的側面と各言語の個別性を明らかにすること。平成12年度にアイロニーの統合理論と日本語の研究がほぼ終わり、これを受けて、平成13年度に中国語・韓国語の調査を実施した。中国語と韓国語の信頼できる専門知識の提供者を活用し、予定していた研究プログラムをほぼ達成できた。これらの成果をもとに、14年度は、日・英・中・韓国語間の「アイロニー関連語彙の構造」について、その普遍性と特異性の特徴づけを行い、最後に研究の総まとめを作成し、その印刷・公表の作業が現在進行しているところである。本研究の特色をまとめると、(1)アイロニーという複雑な言語事象に新しい言語理論のメスを入れたこと。(2)「認識と言語の両レベル」を視野に入れたアイロニー理論を提示したこと。またそのことにより、(3)アイロニーの表現とその関連領域の研究が可能になったことである。また成果と意義については、(1)これまで全く手つかずであったアイロニーとその関連領域の概念が理論的に整理できること。また(2)空な言語が明らかになることにより、各言語の性格がより明確になり、文化人類学的にも示唆する点が大きいことである。なお国際的に見ても、アイロニーの問題をここまで掘り下げた試みはこれまでほとんどないと言ってよい。報告書の完成のあと、更に詳細に検討し、近々アイロニーの専門書を出版する予定である。
