项目摘要

本研究で提案した強命題によれば、従来の規則適用に課せられる条件は、言語システムにはもはや存在しないことになる。したがって、これらの条件によって扱われていた「島の制約」は、もはや言語計算システムによって扱うべきものでなく、知覚システム(知覚の操作)によって説明されるべきものである。この実施計画に従って、知覚の操作に関わる研究を進めた結果、Nakamura(2002)において提案した、島現象は当該の島が統語的処理(認可)を終了した時点で統語操作の領域から不可視的になる(invisible)という提案に呼応する知覚上の条件が存在することが判明した。すなわち、「島」をなす主語条件とか付加詞条件は、それらの文法的処理が済むと同時にon-lineの短期記憶から排除される、いわば、忘れられることによって、その領域にはそれ以上の文法操作が適用できなくなり、島の効果が生じる。この説明は、言語計算システムにおいて、文法的処理が終了するとその部分がそれ以上言語計算システムによって不可視的になるのはなぜかという問いに、知覚処理の観点から説明を与えている点できわめて興味深い。さらに、知覚システムの研究は、日英語のように構造の異なる言語の文解析においても役立つので、言語理論の研究と知覚の研究を実際の教育に応用する試みを行い、英語の学習文法について、(A)学習文法として必須な要素は何か(学習項目の選定)、(B)学習項目の配列はどのようにするのが適切か(学習項目の配列)、(C)生成文法の成果をどの程度盛り込むか(学習内容の説明方法)について試案を述べ、そのような学習英文法の一例として、英語動詞の詳しい記述及びその他の事項の選定を行い、今後の研究の足がかりとした。
