Understanding the molecular principles by which pathogens overcome plant immunity to parasite hosts is mandatory to develop novel plant protection strategies. Fungal and oomycete pathogens deliver small RNAs into host plants to silence plant immunity via cross-kingdom RNA interference, an emerging concept in host-microbe interaction. This project aims at elucidating the molecular mechanisms and functions of sRNA transport from pathogens into plants. We hypothesize that delivery of pathogen sRNAs occurs via extracellular vesicles. Identifying the underlying mechanisms and functions in cross-kingdom sRNA communication will help to develop new applications for crop protection.
