近世改革期の為政者、特に、8代将軍徳川吉宗(享保の改革)→御三卿筆頭田安宗武→老中筆頭松平定信(寛政の改革)→老中真田幸貫(天保の改革)という親子関係の改革の推進者が、どのような思想的影響を受け、武芸思想や武芸観、武芸嗜好を生み出したかを史料調査、解読、分析し研究を進めた。本年度は、当初計画したように16,17年度に分析してきた史料の整理・分析を行い、6月より学会発表の為の準備を行った。夏季休暇期間には、計画通り、和歌山方面へ徳川吉宗関係の史料調査を行い、8月末には収集済みの史料について神戸学院大学・前林清和教授から専門知識の提供、古文書解読などの協力を得て史料の分類、分析などの作業を進め、作業終了部分の史料整理を行った。9月の日本武道学会では16,17年度に分析・整理を行った史料を基に研究を進め「松代藩武芸関係史料『柔術五巻注解全』に関する一考察」と題し発表を行った。真田幸貫と父・松平定信の武芸観や思想的影響、結びつきについて一層明らかにすることができたが、吉宗の血を引く為政者としての自覚もその武芸嗜好に影響を与えているようである。この発表のほか当研究の成果の一部については、2本の論文にして発表した。社会全体に与える影響から武芸を考える場合、特定の流派研究やそれを代表する人物研究では、近世武芸の部分的な様相を言及するに止まってしまう。また、単に為政者個人を研究しても特殊な伝承形式をとる武芸やその思想について明らかにすることはできない。今回の研究を通して、徳川家康に始まる指導的な為政者の武芸実践ならびに武芸嗜好に関する研究は、近世武芸研究において重要な視点であることを打ち出すことができた。これらの成果を近世徳川幕府全般に研究対象を広げ、発展的に継続させたいと考え「近世為政者の武芸実践と武芸政策に関する文献学的研究」(基盤研究C)と題して研究助成の申請を行い採択された。
