英文Bushido(『武士道』)を著し、国際連盟の事務局で活躍した新渡戸稲造において、英米文学の知識がいかに大きな役割を果たしていたかを明らかにすることを目指して研究を行った。「太平洋の橋になる」との大志を抱いた青年時代の新渡戸は、英米文学の研究によってそれを実現できると考えた。最晩年の講演においても、「自分の本職は色々と変わったが、副業とも言うべき英文学への情熱は決して変わらなかった」と述懐している。このような新渡戸稲造の業績に対して、英文学の分野からどのような再評価を行いうるか、それをためす試みであった。この結果、これまで比較的閑却されてきた二つの点を明らかにすることができた。一つは、国際連盟における新渡戸稲造の活躍が、発足時の連盟の中心的スポークスマンとして、国際平和の理念に向けて世界をリードするというきわめて画期的なものであったこと。この成果は編著書、Nitobe Inazo : from Bushido to the League of Nations (Hokkaido University Press,2006)にまとめた。第二は、そのような平和思想と国際主義は、英文学を中心として西洋の文化を広く吸収し、それを生まれ育った日本的及び東洋的な文化と比較対照する過程ではぐくまれていったものだということ。この成果は、Joseph F.Kess and Helen Lansdowne(eds.),Why Japan Matters! (Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives University of Victoria,2005),Vol.IIに掲載の論文"A Japanese Internationalist : Inazo Nitobe's Knowledge of English Literature"にまとめた。
