西村本『おくのほそ道』の言語使用の特色を調査するための作業として、芭蕉が影響を受けた作品のうち『源氏物語』『枕草子』『古今集』を取り上げ、句読点で区切った範囲ごとに2音節の母音の並びを調査した。『源氏物語』の一部については、aaおよびooが最多で次にai・au・ia・io・oiが多かった。『枕草子』ではaa・ai・ia・ioの最多につぎ、au・ua・ui・uu・oi・ou・ooが多く見られた。数量の程度に違いはあるがaa・ai・au・ia・io・oi・ooが多いという傾向は『源氏物語』と一致した。なお『枕草子』のみに多出のものにua・ui・uu・uoがあった。『おくのほそ道』において同じ調査を行ったところ、最多はou・ooである、次にaa・ai・au・ae・ia・ii・io・ua・ui・uu・uo・oa・oi・ooが続いた。数量の程度に違いはあるが、aa・ai・au・ia・io・oi・ooが多いという傾向は『源氏物語』『枕草子』と一致した。また、『古今和歌集』のいてはai・au・ae・ia・ii・iu・io・ua・ui・uo・oa・oi・ooが比較的多いという結果が出た。数量の程度に違いはあるもののai・au・ia・io・oi・ooが多いという蛍光は一致した。ただし、『古今和歌集』ではaaについては『源氏物語』『枕草子』に比べて少なく、また、aa以外では数量に大差は認められなかった。次に『源氏物語』に加え、中世の代表的紀行文『十六夜日記』『東関紀行』と芭蕉の初期の『野ざらし紀行』について、各文節冒頭の母音を調査した結果、『源氏物語』『十六夜日記』が同じ傾向を示し、aおよびo、 i、 u、およびeの順に出現頻度が高かった。一方『東関紀行』『野ざらし紀行』『おくのほそ道』が同傾向を表わした。後者は、前者に比して次の現象が見られた。(1)aで始まるものが減少。内訳として形容詞と助動詞の減少。(2)逆に、uで始まるものは増加。内訳は、名詞と動詞の増加であった。なお、(1)(2)のいずれにおいても『東関紀行』『おくのほそ道』では大幅な増減が見られた。
