本研究の目的は、19世紀後半にはじまる鉄道建設、銀行制度の発展、都市化、製鉄業の発展、国際市場における相対的重要度の高まりなどによるフランス経済の発展に、当時金融業に多く携わっていたとされるユダヤ人がどのように関与していたのか、特にパリに居住するユダヤ人のおよそ半数を占めたアルザス出身のユダヤ人を中心に取り上げることによって明らかにすることである。そのなかで特に本年度得られた重要な論点は以下の二点である。1、19世紀末に東欧ユダヤ人が大量にパリへ移住する以前にアルザス・ユダヤ人が1872年までに社会的・経済的・政治的理由によって各地に移住し、その移住先はパリのみならずフランス国内各地であったこと、さらにはスイスやアメリカへ移住したアルザス・ユダヤ人も少なからず存在しており、それぞれ重要なコミュニティを現地で形成していたこと。2、パリにおけるアルザス・ユダヤ人の移住状況について、特に1840年代以降その数が増加したこと、居住地は当時のパリの商業圏に集中し、従事していた職業も商業に関連したものがその大半であったこと、その一方で「有益な職業」として考えられた手工業がユダヤ人自身による教育機関を通じて彼らに教えられるようになり、特にパリにおいて従来の伝統的職業であった高利貸しや行商から脱却し、広範囲にわたって手工業関連の職業に従事した者が多かったこと。以上のような論点から、パリに移住したアルザス・ユダヤ人が第二帝政期に顕著になったパリの都市化・近代化に一定の社会的・経済的貢献をしたことが推察される。
