本年度は、宮城県図書館・東北大学付属図書館・青森県図書館・弘前市図書館・一関市博物館に蔵されている民俗芸能の文書および藩主の和歌活動を示す文書の調査を精力的に行った。調査には研究分担者のほかに、研究協力者として志立正知(秋田大学教授・地方軍記)、小林一彦(京都産業大学・書誌学)らの助力を得た。3年間で、東北地方の主な文庫をほぼ調査することができた。第一の目的である東北地方の民俗芸能文書に和歌思想・言説の引用・影響を見いだす作業のほかに、地方藩主の和歌活動の実態を明らかにすることにも力点を置いて、精密な調査・研究および討議を行った。その結果、多くの藩主が『古今和歌集』仮名序の和歌思想・言説をもとに旺盛な詠作活動をしていたことが、かれらの家集・定数歌・歌合や紀行文の収集・分析から判明した。また、かれらの中には、領内に数多くの歌枕を措定し、それらを盛んに和歌に詠み、かつ中央の公家歌人たちにも詠んでもらい、武家(地方)と公家(中央)による「領内名所和歌集」なるものを編纂する藩主もいた。また、領内の歴史的遺跡や神社などのほかに歌枕も見てまわり、和歌を詠み巡覧記をものし、家臣に命じて領内の地誌を編纂する藩主もいた。かれらの中には、古今和歌集・伊勢物語・百人一首・源氏物語に関する秘伝の伝授を受け、和歌への「信仰」を強く表明する藩主もいた。また、福島県会津地方の職人文書の中に、和歌の秘伝文書が少なからず混じっている。秋田県の番楽などの芸能文書にも和歌の思想・言説が引用されていることがわかった。本研究は、萌芽研究の精神にのっとり、東北地方の芸能文書にあらわれた和歌の思想・言説の調査から、東北各藩の藩主たちの和歌活動へと調査対象を拡大し、新しい和歌研究とは何を見いだし、どのように考察を進めるべきか、を具体的に示した。すなわち、中古以来の和歌の思想・言説は、長い歴史をつらぬいて中央から遠く離れた地方に、かつ藩主から農民に至る広い階層にまで、あらゆる格差を超えて伝播・浸透している。和歌を研究するとき、これまでは基本的に中央の貴族の文学として考察することを常としてきたが、変更されるべきであろう。本研究は、その意味で新しい和歌研究の新しいスタンスを示すことができた。なお、萌芽研究は、研究成果報告書の刊行は義務づけられていない。しかし我々は、本研究をふまえて新しい研究に進むために、その土台を示す研究成果報告書を刊行し、全国の和歌研究者や図書館等に送付した。この中には、研究概要、研究論文5本、新資料の翻刻・紹介4本を収録した。
