昨年度までに引き続いて、イングランド銀行創設期と同時期の2種類のイギリス東インド会社の株主名簿に分析を加える作業を行った。創設期のイングランド銀行の出資者とかかわって、この2つのリストには、次の特徴がある。(1)2つの株主リストの人名の重複の程度はかなり大きいが、所有株式の金額には異同が見られる。(2)2つの株主リストには、ともに、半島系ユダヤ人、オランダ人、ドイツ人、フランス系ユグノーなど、イギリス人以外の貿易商人、金融商人が散見される。こうした外国商人の影響力の大きさは、当時のイギリスにおける特許会社に共通する特徴であると考えられる。(3)この2つのリストとイングランド銀行の出資者リストおよび株主リストの問には、かなりの共通性が見られる。それゆえに、ウィッグとトーリの対立構造から当時のロンドン商人層の政治的・社会的区別を安易に想定することは困難であるとの印象を持つ。むしろ、そうした政治的対立を抱えながらも、実際の経済活動において両者は深く結びついていたと捉えることができよう。(4)イングランド銀行の株式取引記録を分析すると、特定の商人同士が株式のやり取りを行っていることが分かる。今回取り上げた東インド会社の2つの株式リストのみでは、同様の事実を確認できないが、今後、東インド会社に関しても株式所有の変化を見ていけば、同様のネットワークが確認できる可能性がある。最後にとりまとめ作業を行いながら、全体を概括するために報告書を作成した。
