近年のブロードバンドの爆発的普及に伴い、インターネットに関する経験的研究は質・量ともに充実の一途をたどっている。しかし、その理論的枠組みとしてはいまだ整備されていないというのが現状である。この問題意識のもと、本研究は、Webコミュニティの動態に関する経験的調査を試み、本研究代表者が提唱している「基礎情報学」という理論に基づいて、インターネット空間に関しての理論的分析枠組を拡充しようとするものである。経験的調査においては、Webコミュニティの動態という広範なテーマの中でも、主に以下の3点をサブ・テーマとして設定した。1.Webコミュニティ内における新たな知人関係の形成について2.Webコミュニティでの自生的秩序の生成・維持・変容について3.ユーザの自己呈示とコミュニケーションの相関について調査対象には、地理的なサイト設計と特有の自己呈示が特徴的なコミュニティ・サイト「ぱどタウン」(http://www.padotown.net/)を選んだ。また、調査手法には、ユーザへのネット・アンケート調査、書き込みログについての内容分析とネットワーク分析、ユーザへの対面によるグループ・インタビューの4つを採用した。研究動向としては、平成18年度前半にアンケート調査を、同年度後半に書き込みログの内容分析とネットワーク分析を、平成19年度前半にインタビュー調査を主に実施した。理論的には、生命や心理、社会のシステムについてオートポイエーシスというシステム理論を用いて分析する「基礎情報学」という理論枠組を、インターネット空間におけるコミュニケーションを分析するツールとして用いるための批判・検討を行った上で、上記の経験的調査で得られたデータの分析を実際に試みた。
