项目摘要

旧米国陸軍工兵隊地図局(以下,AMS)の作成した地図に関して,本年度の研究実施計画に従って三つの課題に取り組んだ.第一はAMS図からの地理情報の取得であり,前年度に画像処理・空間参照を行ったAMS「Okinawa1/4800」地形図から,GISを用いて集落などの地名(約750地点)および道路網などの地理情報を取得し,一部についてGPSを用いその位置を確認した.その他に,琉球大学法文学部地理学教室の所蔵するAMS図(約300面)のデジタル化も行った.第二はAMS図のメタデータ取得である.そのために米国公文書館および米国議会図書館においてAMS図の技術マニュアルを新たに入手するとともに,特に琉球列島に関してAMS図を複写した.また,そこに記載されたメタデータも整理することで,同時期に作成されたAMS図でも版により地名などの記載内容や参照された資料が異なることを確認できた.また技術マニュアルによると,AMSは地名をフィールドワークにより収集する場合があり,実際に沖縄島中南部のAMS図に記載された集落や河川などの地名をみると,方言による地名の表記が散見された.その一方,例えば沖縄市の旧名である「コザ」のように,作成過程における地名の誤記が現在でも実社会で使用され続けていることも見いだし得た.第三は,AMS図の利用可能性に関する検討である.上述のようにAMS図は既に失われた地名を当時の発音で記録している場合もあり,その資料的価値は高い.また,アジアについてAMS図は日本の外邦図と同様に第三国の測量機関が作成したものを用いる場合と,測量などを含めAMSが独自に作成する場合とがあった.後者はAMS図に使用した空中写真の撮影年などを記載している場合があり,1940〜50年代のアジア地域の環境を知る上で有用な情報を取得できる可能性を持つ.なお,成果の一部は学会にて報告した.
