「問屋街建築」は、地主、建築主、事業者、テナントによる権利が複雑に組み合わされ実体化した近代的都市空間の基本単位で、離合集散を繰り返す歴史的なプロセスのなかで動的に変化、集積を重ね、特徴ある都市空間を形成してきた。都市的地域産業の場として多大な役割を担ってきた問屋街は、合意形成が容易ではなく、グローバル化が進む東アジアおよび欧州大都市の変容の過程で老朽化しつつあり、その更新のプロセスは都市再生の鍵をにぎっていると考えられる。そこで、中国上海および韓国釜山において、海外研究者の協力を得て代表的な両都市の問屋街を数カ所程度選択し、さらに現地で「問屋街建築」と街区を選択して、1)地図、写真撮影ほかによる記録、2)建築集合の状態および街区形態との構造的関係、3)用途、権利関係などについての概況調査を実施した。収集した情報とデータを、建築計画、都市構造、都市史などの観点から多角的に、分析を加え、将来の本格的調査研究のための基本概念および基本スキームを整備した。
