大型研究への展開をはかるための予備的な企画調査研究として、東アジアにおける「問屋街建築」の調査を文献および現地視察調査によって行った。第1に、東アジアにおける「問屋街建築」の概ねの都市構造、都市活動の現状をつかむことを目的として、東アジアの代表的な大都市である東京を対象として調査を行った。具体的には、東京都中央区東日本橋エリア(日本橋問屋街)の建物調査を実施した。対象地選定の理由は、当該地域が、1)東京都心部の代表的商業集積地、とくに呉服、洋品、繊維、小物などの問屋街であること、2)耐火建築がもっとも早い時期に建設された地域であること、3)都市構造的および都市形態的に近代ビルが集積する必然性をもっていること、4)大都市都心部の再生についての代表的典型的事例として解析できることである。なお、国内の同様の代表的問屋街である大阪船場についても知見を文献によって調査、都市構造との関係において概ねの「問屋街建築」のかかえる課題を把握した。第2に、グローバルな世界経済の動きのともなって大規模な都市改造が進行している東アジア地域の大都市では、相対的に、日本国内の問屋街のステージとは別の興隆期にあり、それらについて上記課題を軸に概要を把握し各区検討することを目的として、韓国のソウル市、大邸市、中国の北京市、西安市、大連市の問屋街および「問屋街」建築の調査を行った。結果、1)大都市の都心商業地域の再生については世界的に同様の動きが観察されること、2)問屋街は各都市構造において立地に類似性がみられ、また都市再生の必要な地域を形成していること、3)その再生手法について文化同一性の課題、今日的な地域産業としての課題、それらを実現に導く建築学的課題があることが明らかになった。なお、東アジア以外の欧州他都市の問屋街についても比較検討を行い、その建築更新および街区更新の手法の開発は世界共通の課題であることを確認した。
