In the second funding phase, New Testament Studies / Jewish Studies and Numismatics will jointly investigate how the function and use of coinage in society and everyday life of Second Temple Judaism are related. With the help of the praxeological model of the CRC, a new perspective will be developed on the aesthetic tensions between Jewish cultural and religious traditions (e.g. aniconism) on the one hand and external precepts regarding the production, materiality, use, and design of coins on the other. In doing so, the project will also expound how intercultural dynamics manifest themselves aesthetically in coinage through appropriation, distinction, and compromise.
