本研究は、ブルーカラー労働者(以下ブルーカラーと略す)に関する歴史的研究は多数存在するが、ホワイトカラー労働者(以下ホワイトカラーと略す)の歴史的研究は著しく後れている現状にかんがみ、その空白部分を埋めることを主たる目的として実施された。そのため、地域的には関東周辺、中部地方、関西地方、北九州地方を、産業上は銀行、重化学工業及び鉱業を選び、それぞれに関係の深い経済団体、企業、労働組合及び個人について、所蔵資料の収集と面接調査を行った。その結果、今までに得られた知見は以下の通りである。1.ホワイトカラーは、ブルーカラーに比較して、企業への定着率が高いといわれているが、今回の調査研究の結果、必ずしもそうはいえず、ホワイトカラーかブルーカラーかというよりも、それぞれが所属している企業の盛衰によって決定的な影響を受けている。2.ホワイトカラーといっても、地域的な差が大きく、東京など大都市周辺の事業所に働くホワイトカラーは、中小都市(たとえば、日立市、豊田市)に働く人々よりも労働移動率が高い。また、同一企業でも、事業所ごとの差が大きく、大都市の本社に働く人々の方が、地方の事業所に働く人々より労働移動率が高い。3.産業別では、予想された通り、銀行のような第3次産業に働く人々の方が、重化学工業や鉱業に働く人々よりも労働移動率が低い。4.本研究の特徴であるライフ・スタイルの面でも、地域差、産業差、本社かそれ以外の事業所かによる差は大きい。本人の職位による差が大きいことはいうまでもない。戦前の場合、戦後とは著しく異なり、ホワイトカラーとブルーカラーとの違いは極めて顕著である。
