江戸時代の出版物の巻末には、出版広告として二、三の書名を掲げたり、数丁に渡り数十点の出版物の目録を掲げている場合がある。それらを網羅的に集めて、江戸時代の出版史研究の基礎データを構築しようとするのが、本研究の目的である。一年の助成しか得られなかったが、この一年で行ったことは、国文学研究資料館が蓄積しているマイクロフィルムの中からと、他の文庫、図書館が所蔵する江戸版本の中から、カード及び写真で、それらの出版広告・蔵板目録を約5,000点収集して、それらを年代別に整理してみた。江戸時代の出版物全体からみると、収集したデータの量もごく僅かだし、詳細な検討もこれからの段階であるが、大局的にみると、1600年代の出版界は京都が中心で、後半に大阪と江戸の出版社が登場するが、天和・貞享の頃に近刊予告などの出版広告が少し現れる程度で、1700年の中頃から出版書肆の蔵板目録が巻末に付載されるようになり、時代が下るにつれて、蔵板目録が付載されることが多くなり、またその目録の内容も増加していく。これは全国的な出版機構と販売網の確立と密接に絡んでいるのであり、1600年代は京都と他都市の本屋の二店の相板が数例見られる程度だが、1700年以降相板者の記載人数も増え、相板出版物も次第に増えていく。江戸時代の出版については、まだまだ不明な点が多く、見返しの蔵板者と巻末刊記或は付載蔵板目録との関わり、相板者同士の関わり具合、塾蔵板、寺の出版と書肆の関わりなど問題点は多い。それらを解明するための基盤を固めたのが、本研究であった。
