江戸の絵本は、精緻な木版彫りの技術に基づいた数版の色摺りを重ねる職人技の美術品であり、東南アジアの出版文化の中でもその技術の水準は極めて高く、日本が世界に誇ることのできる日本文化の粋である。本研究は海外に流出した江戸時代出版絵本の多くを所蔵するボストン美術館を主としながら、メトロポリタン美術館その他、いくつかの機関が所蔵する資料を調査し、アメリカのイーストコーストにおける江戸時代出版絵本の所在目録を作成することを目的としたものである。当初予定していたボストン美術館における絵本の調査については、度重なる先方との日程交渉の結果、先方の都合が折り合わなかったため、やむを得ずこの2年間の調査から外すこととなった。実際に実地調査を行った機関は、メトロポリタン美術館(ニューヨーク市)、パブリックライブラリー・スペンサーコレクション(同市)、フィラデルフィア美術館(フィラデルフィア市)、エール大學美術館(ニューヘブン市)、エール大學バイネッキ図書館(同市)等、ボストン美術館に所蔵される江戸時代出版絵本と同等のコレクションを有する機関を中心に行った。今回研究報告書としてとりまとめ、領域代表者へ提出した「スペンサーコレクション江戸絵本書誌調査報告」は、ニューヨークパブリックライブラリー・スペンサーコレクションで行った詳細な書誌調査カードから主要項目を抜き出して纏めたものであり、また、同報告書付載の「メトロポリタン美術館所蔵絵本目録」は、メトロポリタン美術館所蔵絵本の略目録で、これは実際に原本を通覧しながら同館の図書カードを転記したものである。報告書提出後に補足調査を行ったので、最終的に58点の詳細な書誌調査行うことができた。従来、スペンサーコレクションには古書肆反町茂雄の簡略な目録が備わるが、今回、研究協力者である東洋美術史研究家の岡崎久司氏と共同調査を行ったことにより、より専門的な調査報告を作成することができた。
