本研究は、請来美術を、美術表現に関わる情報を伝達する特有のメディアとしてとらえ、その機能を分析することを通して、日本における外来美術受容の構造を明らかにすることを目的とした。単年度の研究となったために、基礎資料の収集に重点をおき、あわせて、請来美術のメディアとしての機能を分析し、彫刻・絵画各領域におけるそれぞれの特性、両者の相互関係について考察した。1、基礎資料の収集(1)彫刻班清涼寺式釈迦像の伝来と日本における伝播に関する資料の収集。兜跋毘沙門天像(京都・東寺)、聖僧文殊像(東寺)、京都国立博物館及び大阪市立美術館に所蔵する中国彫刻を調査。(2)絵画班アメリカ・ヨーロッパ所在の、日本より流出した、宋元仏画、高麗仏画に関する資料の収集。宋時代の阿弥陀画像に関する資料の収集。観経曼茶羅図(奈良・円照寺)、阿弥陀三尊図(愛知・西方寺)、釈迦如来図(兵庫・個人)の調査。研究成果の一部は、「宋時代の阿弥陀画像」という題で口頭発表した(1994年1月26日、於東京国立文化財研究所)。2、メディアとしての特性請来美術に特有のメディアとしての特性は、美術作品という「モノ」に、さまざまな外来の情報が付帯していることにある。とくに仏教美術の場合は、それが絵画であれ、彫刻であれ、大陸伝来あるいは祖師請来という宗教像(イコン)としての正統性を保証する図像のみが抽出され、「唐本」・「宋本」として、日本で受容され伝播していく傾向が強い。しかしながら、イコンの正統性の保証は、造形の自由の否定を意味するものではなく、受容側の文化構造にしたがって、付帯情報がさらに強化・拡大される場合も少なくない。請来美術のメディアとしての特性を総合的に把握するためには、今後、個々の事例の蓄積とメディア論との整合性の検証、地域・時代による受容過程の差異などについて、考察をふかめることが課題として残された。
