【.encircled1.】本研究は、庄内地方及び山形県の産業組合運動をリードした、山木武夫の行動の軌跡とその背景にある信条と理念を、各種資料の掘りおこしと古老からの聞きとり調査によって解明し、当時の農民の生活実態と農本主義との関わりを解明しようとするものである。【.encircled2.】山木は、山形県自治講習所の卒業生であり、所長加藤完治の人格と思想の影響を強く受け、昭和初期の農民の窮乏を農本主義的な産業組合運動、とくに農業倉庫運動を通して救済することを、自己の使命とした農本主義者である。彼は、庄内の米の流通と保管を独占支配していた巨大な地主勢力の拠点としての山居倉庫への熾烈な闘争のなかで、その目的を達成した。しかしその闘争相手の山居倉庫の地主たちもまた、農本主義者であった。【.encircled3.】この調査のなかで、同じ農本主義といわれながら、この両者はかなり異質な二つの農本主義であることが明らかとなった。山木たちのは、生産農民的・実践的な農本主義(加藤完治-山木-産業組合青年同盟の系譜)であり、他方、山居倉庫を拠点とする巨大地主、とくに酒井家がおし進めたのは、地主的・教学的農本主義であり、それは目の前の農民の窮乏の救済よりは、自己自身の精神の陶治がもっぱら目的とされていた。この二つの農本主義者たちの目的指向と現象認識には、かなりの隔たりがあった。【.encircled4.】しかしこの二つの農本主義派は、わが国の戦時体制の進展のなかで合流を余儀なくされる。具体的には、戦時下の食糧の逼迫化のもとで、昭和14年に米穀配給統制法が施行されて従来の米穀取引所が廃止され、山居倉庫はその経営の継続が不可能になったのである。そして遂に、山居倉庫は山形県購販連合会が、その庄内倉庫として経営することになり、ここに産組の農業倉庫運動と山居倉庫との対立が解消されることになった。この統一が可能となった原因のひとつは、二つの勢力が、根本的に農本主義的性格のものであり、かつ国家権力に対してともに柔順であるという事情があった。【.encircled5.】このような農本主義が農民をとらえる社会経済的メカニズムの解明が残されている。
