リタイヤ期を挟む大企業労働者の生活構造の変化と、変化の過程における行動や意識にどの様な特徴がみられるかについて、実態調査を実施した。その際比較の対象群として、中小・零細企業退職者と日雇いに終始した最下層労働者の計三層について、かなり詳細な訪問・面接調査を実施した。その結果、大企業労働者は企業のリストラクチュアリングの渦中にあって、退職以前から出向・配置転換・分社化による移籍等の身分の不安定化が進行し、いわばなし崩しの退職を迎えていることが判明した。しかし退職後は、なんらかの関連企業に一時的ではあれ最就職の機会を与えられ、契約期限がくれば後続に席を譲って年金生活にはいるし、年金額も生活に充分な額が支給されるのと、現役時代に培われた職場の友人との頻繁な交流の中で、緩やかな老後への移行を経験している。これと対称的なのは下層労働者で、現役時代の不安定な就労を反映して、年金加入期間が切れ切れになるため年金額では生活が不可能になり、いつまでも働きつずけなければならず、この階層では老後の引退生活はいつまで経っても訪れないことになる。
