生涯学習は、今や広範な層の人々の現実的な生活課題として浸透してきているにもかかわらず、そうした人々の要請や活動を意義づける学問的根拠に乏しい。本研究は、人間の生涯にわたる学習活動を人格発達論の枠組みの中で論理実証的に意味づける目的をもって実施された。本研究では、まずE.H.エリクソンの生涯発達論を基軸に据え、彼の定式する「人格的活力」の構成要素を各発達段階に見合った具体的な行動や意識項目に翻案する作業から始まり、子どもを中心に実際の調査研究に入った。この報告書においては、子どもの現在の教育状況を生涯学習の観点から根源的に見直すことの必要性を説いた論稿から出発する。研究成果の報告論文1は、『キーワードで読む生涯学習の課題』(ぎょうせい、94年刊)の拙稿「新しい世代の教育・援助」で、成人してからの生涯学習を内面的に動機づける子どもの人格育成が、現代の社会価値、家庭・学校の教育状況から見て危機に頻しており、現実に将来の生涯学習社会と相克するアイデンティティ未確立の青年が増加していることを、論者自身が先年実施した日本とオーストラリアとの比較調査等を踏まえながら論究している。報告論文2「子どもの人格構造の実証的研究」(『現代学校教育の社会学』福村出版、94年刊)は、小学校の年齢段階で発達するエリクソンの言うコンピテンスの人格特性が子どもの人格全体の中で如何なる位置を占め、どのような環境要因と関係があるかを実証的に解明したものである。報告論文3「中学生の自己像形成要因に関する調査研究」では、思春期を迎えて自己を模索し始めた中学生とその保護者に対して行った質問紙調査を中心に、質問項目より構成された中学生の自己像指標を通して人格形成に与える影響因を探っている。
