本年度は主要な研究素材を年代記を中心とする叙述史料とし、それらについて、民族や地域的人間集団を示すいくつかのことばと概念の変動を分析した。そこから以下のような結論が得られた。まず中世盛期のエトニ意識は、中世前期の諸部族意識の単純な連続体ではない。10世紀末のフランス王国においては「フランク人」「ブルターニュ人」「ブルゴーニュ人」「ノルマン人」「アキテーヌ人」「ゴート人」「バスク人」の7つの部族を指摘できるが、12世紀においてはそのうちの「アキテーヌ人」「ゴート人」はエトニとしては解体し、「オーヴェルニュ人」「ポワトゥー人」のような、エトニ以前の地域的住民集団が分立して来た。「バスク人」も同様の解体過程にあった。エトニが存続できたのは、明確な起源神話とシンボルを持ち、さらに領邦という形の政治的枠組みを与えられた場合に限られる。「フランク人」の概念はカロリング王権の記憶とカペー王権の支配に結び付いていた。そのため10-11世紀の王権の実質的な勢力範囲の縮小に伴って、このエトニも分解傾向を見せ、「フランドル人」のようなエトニ、「アンジュー人」のような地域住民集団が分立する。もっともこれは弾力的性格を持ち、狭い意味では国王直轄支配権の住民の呼称であるが、ノルマンディ、ブルターニュを除く北フランス住民全体を指す場合もある。12世紀においては、外の世界に関連した叙述において、フランス王国の住民を一体のものと捉える感覚が、間欠的にではあるが、表明されていた。その際には「ガリア人」「フランク人」といった言葉が用いられている。この時代でもフランスがひとつの王国をなしていることは忘れられていなかったし、その住民としてのまとまりの意識も存在していた。すなわち、王国規模の帰属意識と地域単位のそれとが共存していたのである。
