(1)このテーマ設定は私自身の20世紀アメリカ経済史研究の発展・深化にとって適切だった。カリフォルニア経済は現在、その人口比をはるかに越える輸出シェアをもち、かつそれを伸ばしており、ハイテク製造業の産出増加率も、シェアを伸ばしている。個人所得の伸び率こそ、近年全国平均を下回ったものの、それも子供数の比率の高さによるものである。北米自由貿易協定の締結によってメキシコとカナダとの貿易関係が深まることで、この地域の重要性はますます高まるであろう。この地域の輸出指向性、ハイテク指向性、そして高賃金経済は、中西部の製造業ベルトと対照的な特徴である。(2)私の前稿(「アメリカ経済の発展と地域」遠藤輝明編『地域と国家』所収)では、シリコン・バレーをとりあげたが、今回の研究ではロサンゼルスと南カリフォルニア地域の意義を再発見した。この地域の核となる産業は航空機であり、イ)両大戦間期、ロ)第二次大戦後冷戦の間にほぼ今日の原型が形成されてしまった。しかも、強調すべきは、アメリカの伝統的な製造業地帯である中西部が民生用耐久財大量生産で先行したことが逆条件となり、イ)の時期にフロンティアとしての南カリフォルニアが民間・国防両面の可能性を秘めた航空機産業のメッカとなることを許した。第二次大戦期には戦闘機の大量生産に乗り出し、ロ)の時期には航空宇宙産業への脱皮を開始する。(3)ニュー・イングランド地域も伝統的な繊維産業は南部との競争に敗れ、第二次大戦後は、将来を危ぶまれた。しかし、マサチューセッツ工科大学をはじめとする知的な集積、クラフト技術の優位の伝統は、ハイテク、国防産業への転換を可能にした。(4)この二つの海岸沿いの地域に大きなインパクトを与えたのは、冷戦とそれを背景にした軍拡だった。両地域には、人口比をはるかに越える国防予算が投じられた。今日のアメリカの都市問題、衰退地域の問題などは、この予算の不均等分配によって悪化した可能性がある。また、両地域ともすでに関連産業の「集積の経済」のメリットを有しており、かつ多角化しているので、冷戦後の国防予算の縮小も、致命的な打撃を両地域に与えるとは思われない。
