カイラル・クォーク・ソリトン模型に基づく核子の構造に関するここ一年間の研究成果を以下にまとめる。この模型はクォーク場のみを独立な自由度として含むQCDの有効模型であるが、この模型と有効中間子理論であるSkyrme模型の間には非常に密接な関係が存在する。実際、我々の研究のそもそもの動機は、π中間子から核子を作るというSkyrme模型の奇抜なアイデアの微視的な意味を明らかにしたいということにあった。これから当然予想されるように、多くの核子の観測量に対する二つの模型の予言は概ね似通ったものになっている。ところが、最近我々は、二つの模型の間に存在する決定的な違いを見いだした。即ち、カイラル・クォーク・ソリトン模型には存在する(ある種の物理量に対する)1/N_c回転補正が、Skyrme模型の枠組みの中には全く存在しないのである。この違いは、核子の模型としてのSkyrme模型の致命的な欠陥となる可能性がある。実際、Skyrme模型が核子の擬ベクトル結合定数g_Aを甚だしく過小評価することはg_A問題と呼ばれて10年来の問題となっていたが、1/N_c回転補正の欠落がこの原因であることはほとんど明らかである。Skyrme模型にこの1/N_c回転補正が存在しない理由は、ラグランジアン及びそれからNoether定理を用いて導かれる有効中間子流のLorentz構造を解析すれば、直接確かめることができる。しかし、この事実のもっと根元的な理由は、クォーク・レベルのラグランジアンに遡ることによってのみ明らかにされる。即ち、カイラル・クォーク・ソリトン模型における問題の補正は、関与する二つの演算子の正しい時間順序を保持することによって生じるが、Skyrme模型などの有効中間子理論と一対一の対応を付けられる標準的なfunctional bosonizationの方法は、この演算子順序を正しく取り入れていないことが示される。いずれにしても有効クォーク模型と有効中間子模型との間に見いだされたこの違いは、単にいくつかの観測量が再現できるかどうかという問題を超えて、もっと普遍的な意味を持つものであり、更なる探求が望まれる。
