事業所統計調査報告を利用して、1980年代における東京圏での事業所の集積動向を検討した上で、全国の主要都市における支店従業者の集積量を都市成長と関連させながら分析した。その結果、下記の諸点が明らかになった。1.1980年代後半期の東京圏の従業者の増加は主に金融・保険業、不動産業など含めた広義の対事業所サービス業の成長によるものであった。東京への集中率が従来相対的に高く、しかも雇用量も大きかった卸売業などの成長率は、東京圏よりもむしろ広域中心都市で高かった。2.全国の主要都市を支店従業者の集積量で序列化すると、二大都市、名古屋、広域中心都市・横浜、県域中心都市といった階層性が認められる。ただし、広域中心都市の間にも、福岡と他の都市では、集積量に大きな差があり、しかもその差が1980年代に拡大した。県域中心都市の間にも、集積量に大きな差がある。しかし、支店の本社所在地構成は同階層内に大きな差がない。三大都市および広域中心都市の支店の大半が東京または大阪企業の支店からなるが、県域中心都市の場合には、二大都市企業のほかに地方企業の支店比率が高くなる。3.都市の全従業者に占める支店従業者の比率は、広域中心都市12〜22%、県庁所在都市10%前後となっている。大企業本社が集積する三大都市の場合、東京の同比率が5%と低率であるが、大阪・名古屋では同比率が13%前後に及ぶ。4.1980年代後半期の支店従業者の増加は、東京圏の横浜・千葉・大宮など首都圏整備計画において業務核都市に位置づけられている都市、および広域中心都市で大きかった。後者の動きは、1980年代前半期から引続き認められる現象であるが、前者の動きは1980年代後半期に顕著になった対事業所サービス業の集積を主な内容とする。本研究の成果の一部はすでに学会発表したが、論文発表の方は準備中である。
