The aim of this study was to establish the efficient and accurate method for mass-screening of osteoporosis. Norland XR-26 as the Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) system had excellent accuracy and precision, but the time required for the anterior-posterior spine measurement by this system was too long to measure the enough number of candidate for health examination. We modified this system, and required time was 30% shorten. With this method, it is possible to make 50 to 60 Bone Mineral Density (BMD) measurements per day. Furthermore we researched another method, and selected the ultrasound bone densitometry (US) as a suitable substitute method for mass examination. About 1300 female examinees were measured by Lunar A-1000 US system. With this method 70 examinees could measured per day. From the bone stiffness of the calcaneus in an ultrasound method, it is difficult to come to accurate grip with the systemic bone volume, but this method makes up for the disadvantages of DEXA and is of use for screenings. So that we recommend a mass screening system for osteoporosis in which the ultrasound method is made the primary examination and DEXA is made the secondary one. From the Mass examination by this system we found the knowledge about the relationship between BMD or bone stiffness and life style, for example that the exercise habit in young age were attribute to the good condition of bone.
