バブル経済崩壊後、輸出産業である自動車や電気製品製造業に従事していた日系人労働者は再契約されず、各職場からその存在はほぼ消失した。一方、安定した国内市場を有する食品製造業においては、平成2年以降、今日に至るまで雇用が継続している。今回、調査対象とした事業所は従業員約2000名を有するが、そのうち平均30〜50名の日系ブラジル人を雇用している。契約期間は平均2〜3年で、満期になると大半は一時帰国する。日本で蓄えた金額は、住居の新築等に当てられ、住環境も改善され、ブラジルにおける充実した生活の糧となっている。5年間の雇用を通じて、新規の者は減り、再来日した者が主な労働力となっている。その結果、初期に問題となった結核等の感染者は、現在は発見されていない。また、食品製造業の性格上、入国後、約2週間は消化器系伝染病の保菌者の有無を確認し、その上で就労を開始しているので、入国時のトラブルも特に見られない。人事面でも、勤勉な労働者が再雇用され、生活習慣もより健康的な方向に向かっている。ただし、食習慣については、ブラジルとほぼ同様な食料品の入手が日本国内でも可能であり、その結果として、初期に指摘された、日本人に比べ、高度肥満が多い傾向は変わっていない。それと共に、高脂血症をはじめとした成人病対策は、日本人同様必要である。Zungの抑うつ尺度を用いた調査は、当事業所の定期健康診断が春期に実施されている関係上、今後、調査を開始する予定である。
