今年度は、3月における海外出張により、イギリスの大英図書館で約半月学ぶ機会を得たので、それも利用して研究実施計画に沿って、次のような結果を残したイギリス・ロマン主義時代の社会全般についての歴史的考察と当時の主要な文学雑誌と新聞の出版情況。当時の定期刊行物と文学をめぐるこれまでの基本的研究を中心に相当数の文献を引き続き読みながら、併せて社会全体についても理解を深めつつ、当時の勃興するジャーナリズムの力、読者層の広がりなどの様々な動きについての視野を更に拡大した。当時の主要定期刊行物へのロマン主義者たちの実際の寄稿の検証。昨年度のロマン主義詩人たちとジャーナリズムの相互関係の概観から、今年は更に一歩踏み込んで、ロマン主義詩人のうちS・T・コールリッジのジャーナリズム活動と文学活動の相関関係という個別的かつ具体的な事例の研究に着手し、実際に当時の投稿記事と詩作品を読んで比較対照しつつ、従来、詩人とジャーナリストの側面を別々にして考えられがちだったこの詩人について、二つの側面を相関させると、詩人としての活動にもジャーナリスティックな関わりが常に影を落としていることが分かり、新視点を得られることが判明した。特に詩の内容によって、公的な内容を持つものは執筆後比較的早く読者大衆に声を届けるために定期刊行物に載せ、もっと私的な内容のものは時間をかけて単行本に収録するという選択を行なっていることが興味深かった。その新たな知見をまとめて、2004年10月7日に立教大学文学部第二回人文研究会で「S・T・コールリッジとジャーナリズム-Morning PostとCourierへの寄稿を中心として-」と題して口頭発表し、現在これに手を入れて研究誌に投稿準備中である。2年間、広くて奥の深い分野の全体像に目配りするのに忙しかったが、コールリッジを初め詩人と定期刊行物の関わりをきっかけにして、今後成果をさまざまな形で論文にしてゆくつもりである。
