学習者の発音が現在どのような状況にあり,どこをまず修正すべきか,といった発音カルテの作成について検討してきた。発音構造の包括的記述とは,話者や性別といった発音とは無関係の要因によって変形を被らない音声の物理表象を言い,個々の音素の絶対的な物理特性ではなく,音と音との関係だけに基づいた音声の構造的表象である。本年度は,この構造的表象を少量の音声から頑健に推定する方法について検討し,個々の母音が一サンプルずつあれば,その学生の発音の「今」を推定可能であることを実験的に示した。更に,音と音の関係のみを観測しているものの,どの母音から矯正することが望ましいのか,その学習順序が,学習者と教師間で構造的表象を比較することで求まることを示した。構造的表象を用いれば,異なる話者間の比較において,年齢,性別の差による影響を効果的に低減できるため,話者間比較が容易に行なえる。更には,学習者群を分類し,日本人の話す英語にはどのような型が存在するのか,という問いにも答えることができる枠組みであることも示した。発音の是非の持つ社会的側面を分析するために,webによるバーチャルオーディションを行なった。これは,面接試験において当事者の発音も評価材料として与えられていた場合に,その発音の善し悪しが人選過程にどのような影響を及ぼすのかを見るためのものである。実際には,秘書及び新入社員の(発音データ付き)書類選考という形で行なった。いずれの場合においても,発音の善し悪しというのが人選過程において非常に重要な要因となっていることが示された。個々の事例を見て行くと,海外経験者は発音の重要性が低下する(非母語英語への慣れ,と解釈される)と同時に,当事者の資格の有無を重視する,などの傾向が見られた。また,実際に海外にて活動をする人材を求める場合は,英検などのペーパーテストより,発音能力の方を重視する様子が示された。
