介護が必要な高齢女性を対象として、日常着の着装アドバイスやコーディネートの工夫をグループで行い、他者から自分の服装に対して共感を得ることによって、対人交流が活性化され、心身の健康状態が維持・改善される効果(ファッション・セラピーの効果)を臨床的に実証することを目的として、グループ療法によるファッション・セラピーを試みた。対象者は、介護老人保健施設入所の高齢女性5名で、これらの人選は協力施設に依頼した。実施期間は2004年6月から11月までの6ヶ月間、約3週間に1回の間隔で、計8回実施した。実施内容は、対象者と担当者が同じ場所に集まり、最初にその日の健康状態や着用している衣服について尋ねた。導入として服装写真を刺激として呈示して、対象者に服装の嗜好を尋ね、装いに関心をもたせた。次に、対象者が所有する衣服や担当者が持参した衣服を人台に着せて、対象者全員でコーディネートの工夫や意見交換を行った。また、対象者に着用して鏡で自分の姿を見てもらい意見交換を行った。初回時と最終回時に、対象者にシャイネス度を測定する質問に口頭で答えてもらい、施設職員にはN式老年者用精神状態尺度(NMスケール)と生活能力評価の記入を依頼した。1名は体調が悪化したため4回目で中止した。残り4名の対象者全員が回を重ねるごとに服装への関心が高まり、対人関係や心身に何らかの改善が見られた。6ヶ月後、NMスケールの評価は「家事、身辺整理」に2名、「関心、意欲、交流」に1名の改善が、生活能力評価では「行動範囲」に2名の改善が見られた。その他の項目はすべて実施前を維持していた。施設内では高齢者が受身の生活を送ることが多く、心身の機能が低下する傾向にあるため、維持することも大きな成果と考えられる。これらの結果は、身近な衣服をコミュニケーション材として様々な会話が生まれ、対象者同士の関わり合いが積極的になり、心身の健康の維持・改善へと繋がったと考えられ、担当者だけでなく他の入所者と関わりをもつことができるグループ療法ならではの成果と考えられる。
