The purpose of this project is to construct a more rational earthquake-resistant design method, referred to as "earthquake-response constrained design method." The proposed method enables one to find the set of member stiffnesses of the building frame which exhibits local responses of a prescribed distribution to design earthquakes. The following results have been obtained.(1)Earthquake-response constrained design methods have been developed for plane shear buildings, for elastically supported plane shear buildings, for three-dimensional shear buildings and for plane braced frames.(2)A series of time history analyses have been conducted on frames designed by means of the proposed method subjected to ten artificial earthquakes and the validity of the proposed method has been verified.(3)The earthquake-response constrained design method has been extended to one-dimensional distributed-mass structures. A procedure for finding the mass distribution of the structure which exhibits a specified response curvature distribution has been presented.(4)A new concept called an ordered set of optimal solutions of similar regular trusses has been introduced. A practically powerful method has been presented of approximate optimum plastic design of large regular trusses on the basis of this concept. A sequential optimal truss generator has also been devised for regular trusses on the basis of an ordered set of optimal solutions with respect to the fundamental natural frequency.(5)A problem of designing a multi-story multi-span plane frame for a specified set of member-end fiber strains under a set of static design loads has been formulated. Several classes of closed-form solutions of practical significance have been derived to the problem.
