Expression of carbohydrate antigens in human liver tissues and hepatocelular carcinomas was studied. L. Hepatocellular carcinoma was associated with the qualitative and quantitative changes of glycolipids. 2. From the study on the well characterized carbohydrate antigens, i.e., blood group-related antigens, the following conclusions were obtained. 1) Blood group antigens were expressed by biliary epithelial cells, but not by liver cells. 2) Biliary epithelial cells expressed a series of type 1 chain blood group antigens and difucosylated type 2chain antigens. 3) Expression of blood group antigens depended on the size of the bile ducts.
