すでに実施した、タイ東北部スリン県タ-サワン村でのfield surveyによって得られた全世帯に関する社会的、経済的、人口学的デ-タの整理、加工を行い、所得分布、土地所有分布などの数値計算や村の開発に伴う意識変化、開発のための諸組織の形態などの実態が明らかにされた。1.所得分布については、所得分配の格差はあまり大きくない。2.土地所有分布については、土地なし農民は全世帯の5%であり、大部分自作農である。所有規模については大きな格差は見られない。3.村の僧侶が指導者となって実践された開発過程で村人の意識変化が顕著に見られた。村人は自分たちにとって本当に必要とされる(適正な)開発とは何であるか。また自立的、内発的発展を進めていくためには何をすればよいか。自分の役割などについて次第に深く認識していくようになる。4.過去10年間で開発事業がいくつか実施されたが、そのなかで特に米(コメ)銀行に注目した。米銀行の資本は出資者が拠出する米の他に、伝統的仏教儀式である、ricepha pa、Thot pha paのときに寺に寄進される米の一部、それに寺領地(および無償で提供される私有地)を用いて、二期作目の稲作(通常は一期作)を共同作業で行い、その収穫の一部がそれぞれ当られている。第2番目の資本の調達方法はいわば仏教におけるタンブン(徳を積む)の教えを、相互扶助の手段にまで適用した。これはタンブンの新しい解釈を必要とする慣行である。第3のそれは伝統的共同体の基礎であった相互扶助の精神を復興させたものである。これらの行為はすべて仏法(Dhamma)の教えとその実践によって導かれたものである。私はこの点に注目して、この村を「仏法共同体」と名づけた。ここに仏教を中心とした伝統文化を生かしたタイの内発的経済発展の可能性を見い出した。
