Single-crystal X-ray diffractometer with micro-source and area detector

The rapid structure elucidation of small-molecule-based crystalline material systems is an essential basis for the continuing competitive research at the Heinrich-Heine-University (HHU) of Düsseldorf in the field of materials, functional agents, catalysis, sensors and others. The availability of a modern area-detector single-crystal X-ray diffractometer with a micro-source exchange unit, which will only be used in research, is fundamental for the research projects at the HHU.In subprojects of the newly established Research Training Group 2482 (Modulation of Intersystem Crossing - ModISC) at the HHU, the structure determination of compounds investigated there is important. This structure determination can be carried out in the crystalline solid with the single-crystal diffractometer.The proposed diffractometer allows the determination of light atomic structures with very small crystals with dimensions well below 0.1 x 0.1 x 0.1 mm3, requires no cooling of the X-ray source and no high voltage power supply, so that compared to conventional devices significantly lower energy consumption and trouble-free continuous operation is guaranteed. Of the two existing diffractometers at the Düsseldorf structural chemistry institute, the single-crystal diffractometer obtained in 2012 is soon in need of replacement due to aging and due to the unfortunately already missing support (announced by the company Bruker).
