项目摘要

先ず、前年度購入したインド考古局の年次報告書(Memoir of Archaeological Survey of India)に記載されているこれまでの研究成果(特にA.Foucherの仏誕生図像に関わる考察)、J.Auboyer,“Buddha"、あるいは名古屋大学の宮治昭氏の近著『涅槃と弥勒の図像』など仏伝美術に関する先行の諸論などを検討しながら、特に仏伝図像における伝統的表現とガンダーラで成立した図像との比較から、典拠とされたテクストの相違を推察した。ガンダーラにおける仏伝図については、A.Foucherによる大著“L'art greco-buoddhique du Gandhara"によって図相の比定が試みられて以来この見解が継承され、H.Ingholtや最近ではH.C.Ackermanによる研究が発表されている。しかし、グプタ時代以降にサールナートを中心とした地域で一般化する仏八相図の図像的成立に関し、これまでJ.HarleやJ.G.Williamsなどによる考察が試みられたが、明快な結論が出されずにきた。そこで、今年度は特にこの問題を中心に古代初期から中世前期にいたる仏伝図の図像的出現頻度を調査し、特定の主題によって仏伝図が構成される傾向を後クシャーン時代のマトゥラーに求め、グプタ時代にここから四大事を一組とする図像が生み出されたことを確認する一方古代期以来仏教徒によって継承されてきた聖地巡礼の伝統のなかから特に愛好された八地方に関わる説話と共に図像化されていることを宋代の法賢訳『八大霊塔名号経』に記される八大聖地が一致することもこれを裏付ける資料として指摘した。更に個々の仏伝図像をガンダーラに求めつつも四大事に四主題を組み合わせ一組とする図像はサールナートに始まり、後グプタ時代から中世前期にいたるナーランダーを中心とした東インドで継承されることを図像的に実証した。この結果は、本年5月下旬に開催される第47回美術史学会全国大会シンポジウム「宗教説話と美術」に、基調報告として発表が予定されている。研究を進めるに従い仏教説話の主題数が当初の計画を大幅に上回ることが判明し、全体を把握するため、今後も同様に経典の記述を細かく検討し図像の分析を続ける予定である。
