北海道から沖縄に至る日本各地の美術館や資料館、または個人の所蔵する江戸時代を中心とする庶民染織品、及びその伝統を強く継承する明治から昭和初期にかけての庶民の染織品約1600点に関する資料を収集し、カードを作成するとともに、コンピューターを用いてデータベースを作成した。個々の作品については、通し番号・名称・時代・世紀・法量・出典文献等の名称・出典資料における作品番号・同図版番号・解説等の頁・産地・材質・技法・模様・用途などのデーターを、可能な限りカードに記入、あるいはコンピューターに入力した。データを収集した染織品は、素材では麻・木綿のものが圧倒的に多いが、絹製品もわずかながら含まれている。研究の庶民染織品の産地は全国各地に及ぶが、本調査研究では、能率の良い資料収集を意図して、染織品の産地および内容ごとにまとまった大きなコレクションから資料収集にとりかかり、次第に小さなコレクションへと移っていった。作品の数が1600点にも及ぶため、紙焼き写真の調達は非常に困難であり、写真のゼロックス・コピーで代用せざるを得なかったが、作品の所在と所蔵者が明らかになったうえ、作品のコピーもカード化できたので、写真は必要に応じて所蔵者より調達できると考える。なお、データベースは、ハードウェアにNEC製9801シリーズを使用し、データベースソフトには管理工学研究所製「桐」を使用した。データは、作品名や所蔵者名、素材・産地などによる検索が可能であり、様々な仕様によるプリントアウトもできるようになっている。
