音楽的音高名を他の音と比較することなしに答える能力を持つ絶対音感保有者が、他の音高との関係を判断する相対音高課題をどのようにこなすことができるかを明らかにするために、次のような実験を行なった。1.基準音が異なる場合の音程識別(1).基準音がC(ハ長調の主音)の場合と、それよりも1/6半音、1/3半音、1/2半音高い場合で、さまざまな大きさの音程を提示し、その音程名を識別する。音楽的訓練を受けた絶対音感非保有者は、どの基準音条件でも同じくらいの成績を示したのに対し、絶対音感保有者はC以外の基準音の条件で成績の低下を示し、Cからのずれが大きくなるほど成績の低下が顕著になった。2.基準音が異なる場合の音程識別(2).基準者がC,1/2半音低いE,F#の各条件で、260-540セントの大きさの音程を提示し、音程の識別を求めた。音楽的訓練を受けた絶対音感非保有者はどの条件でも正確に音程を識別できたのに対して、絶対音感保有者のうちの何人か(およそ1/3)は、C以外の基準音条件のときに目だった成績の低下を示した。3.異なる調性コンテクストのもとでのメロディーの再認.標準メロディーをC majorで記譜された音譜によって提示し、比較メロディーを聴覚的にC major,1/2半音低いE major,F# majorの3種類の調性条件のもとで提示して、両者が同じか違うかの判断を求めた。絶対音感保有者では、楽譜とは異なる調でメロディーが聞こえてくる場合に、再認成績の低下が見られた。これらの結果から、絶対音感保有者は絶対音高にとらわれる傾向があり、相対的音高関係を知覚するのに困難を感じる場合があることが示された。絶対音感が音楽的には能力の欠如を表す場合があることが指摘される。
