教育はその国や地域の歴史や伝統など文化の上に構想されねばならない。沖縄には歌や踊り、漆器や織物など豊かな伝統文化があるが、沖縄の教育が本土並の学力の育成を追求するあまり、伝統文化と無関係に学校教育が実践されることが起こりかねない。本研究では具体的な学校教育のなかで、沖縄の民謡や民踊、棒術などを授業や学校行事などに取り入れながら、学力形成の在り方を追究するもので、沖縄の歴史や文化を調査するとともに、浦添市立宮城小学校・宮城幼稚園の教師たちと共同で授業や学校行事などの立案・実践・分析はもとより、研究者自身も授業や身体的表現活動を指導して研究を深めた。特に1992年10月の運動会では、行進や野外劇、創作舞踊など、沖縄の曲やリズムや踊りの「結い回る」や「エーサー」、「カチャシー」を取り入れ、伝統武術の「棒術」などを種目として取り上げた。1993年2月の学芸会にも「エーサ」や「さびら」などの沖縄のリズムと踊りと「沖縄空手」や沖縄の民話「きじむなー」を基盤に、「かさじぞう」を初め「ペルシアの市場にて」や「走れメロス」のオペレッタを上演した。また研究者自身が沖縄をテーマにした150行の叙事詩「不死鳥の如く」を書き、それに梶山正人(千葉経済短期大学教授)が沖縄固有の曲と中国の曲を基調とした作曲をして表現活動の実践させるなど、沖縄の伝統的な唄や踊りのリズムと本土の民話や欧米調の物語や曲想との結合と、歌や身体的表現活動と教科の授業を関連させて学力の育成を試みた。研究の結果、子どもたちに構成・演出・表現などで多面的に追究する思考力や創造性や感性や社会性が育ち、追求力や集中力、持久力や自立心や耐性などの精神的な意志力の形成が顕著にみられ授業や学級活動との相互関連性のなかで学力が充実するなど、伝統文化を教育に生かす方向性をとらえることができた。
