Basic Study on the Collection of Bibliographic Information Relating to Archival Science and the Development of a Database

Considering the limit of time the present research project concentrated on collecting bibliographic information on literature published by archival institutions. For inputting data into a computer, a data sheet with 19 main fields of record as well as a manual for data description were devised after careful discussion by the investigator and his cooperators. A special classification scheme was also devised for subject retrieval.Analysis of modern archival processing and consultation of some archival bibliographies published in other countries have contributed to the establishment of this scheme. Personal computers NEC-98 Series and a software package ''KIRI'' which was popular for a relational database were used for the present project. The database consists of 32 main and sub fields. 5 of which being allotted to subject entries. As of the end of February 1993, the total number of records accumulated in the database was 1758, while the actual number of articles collected from 63 journals was 1626.The present research project was successful in its initial purpose but the following problems should be solved for the further development toward a nationwide database of literature relating to ''archival science'' : i.e. (1) to collect whole information on archival literature including those of other countries ; (2) to build a database as early as possible ; (3) to review the classification scheme ; and (4) to open the database to the public.
