戦後西欧における歴史学の新潮流に影響され、歴史学のあり方への全面的な反省の気運が起っている。本年度においては、とくに英国中世史研究のなかでの、19世紀末の、注目すべき論争、J・H、ラウンドとH・ホールの論争を中心に研究をつづけた。英国中世史を分析する場合、どうしても必要な史料として、全百巻なるRollsSeriesなる史料集がある。英国史学思想史を考える場面にも、このRollsSeries成立史の全面的分析も、重要な研究課題となるであろう。しかし、本年度は、そのシリーズの最終巻The Red Book of Exchegier、зret'sの成立史を取り挙げ、これにまつわる論争史、その論争のもつ史学思想史上の意味を検討した。最初この史科集の編集、出版をまかされたのは、前述のJ、H、ラウンドムH・ホールの2人であった。この両人が史科を検討していく課題において、この十三世紀に成立した史科に疑義を持ちはじめたのが、前者のラウンドであった。したがって、このむね H.ホールに申し入れ、出版を見合うようすすめたが、H.ホールの反対に会い、結局H.ホールによる単独出版となった。この19世紀末の英国は、19世紀前半ドイツ人L.r.ランケにより確立された、学問としての歴史学の前堤としての巌密な史科批判の方法が導入された時期であり、英国史学界においても史科そのものに、きわめて神経質になっていた時期でもあった。この風潮が、もたらした論争の内、もっともきびしいのが、この論争であった。私的に、わづか100部しか発行しなかったパンフレット等を多数集め、この論争を克明にたどり この論争の意義を明らかにした。結果としては、J、H.ラウンドに勝利は帰したが、この論争のもつ、近代史学史上の意味は大きいといえよう。
