本研究は、百科全書派の唯物論、カトリック神学、理神論、それぞれの理論体系において「最高存在」(Etre supreme)がどのような理論的位置をしめていたかを検討し、従来いわれてきたように、「最高存在」が理神論の神であったのかを明らかにしようとするものであった。検討をつうじて明らかになったのは、以下の点である。1.まず、理神論と唯物論の論争の検討から、以下の点が明らかになった。(1)両理論とも、自然の調和という結果を説明するための原因を何らかのものに求めている。(2)理神論においては、物質と感性は両立しないと考えられ、したがって物質が運動している場合、その原因は物質の外部に求められ、原因の連鎖を終結させるものとしての「最高存在」が設定された。(3)唯物論においては、物質と感性は結合され、したがって、運動こそが物質の自然状態だとされ、物質の外部に運動の原因をもとめる必要がなくなり、究極原因としての神である「最高存在」が排除された。2.つぎに、理神論とカトリック神学との比較から、以下の点が明らかになった。(1)「最高存在」という概念は、両者に共通して使用されている鍵概念である。(2)しかし、「最高存在」という概念が使用される文脈は異なっている。理神論における「最高存在」は、神の地上的・人間的属性をかぎりなく除去する方向で使用されるのに対し、カトリック神学におけるそれは、多様な地上的・人間的属性を許容する方向で使用されている(ただし、カトリック神学についてはさらに検討が必要)。3.「最高存在」は理神論の神であるばかりではなかった。
