和玉篇の古写本・古版本は約三十種に及ぶ、この三十種を川瀬一馬氏は、成立並びに伝流の関係から、八類に類別されている。その類別されたものの中から、第二類本の篇目次第、第五類本の慶長十年刊夢梅本、第八類本の慶長十五年刊本の三種について和訓の索引を作成して、これを公刊した。今回は第一類本の玉篇要略集、第二類本の弘治二年写本、第三類本の拾篇目集、第四類本の米沢図書館蔵本・玉篇略の五種を選び、この五本のすべての和訓を採取し、これを同一見出し漢字と同一和訓を集合させて、五種対照の索引を作成した。さらに既刊の篇目次第、夢梅本、慶長十五年刊本(以上この研究代表者の作成)と音訓篇立(他者の作成)を加えて、同一見出漢字と、同一和訓の有無を照合し、この結果を符号によって五種対照索引の末尾に示した。この結果九種の和玉篇の和訓の総合が得られた。これによって和玉篇和訓の諸問題の解明をはじめとして、他の古辞書の和訓との比較研究は当然の事のほか、語彙研究の全体に大いに貢献しうるものと考えている。次年度にはこの対照索引を公刊する予定であるので、この準備を継続的に行なう。今回取り上げた五種の本文編のうち拾篇目集(国立国会図書館蔵本)と米沢文庫蔵本は特別の許可のもと写真撮影を行なう。玉篇略と弘治二年本と玉篇要略集(大東急記念文庫蔵)の三種は複製本が公刊されてはいるが、極めて高価であることと、入手が容易でないことから、この三種については、手写本を作成した。これを影印して本文編とする。
