本研究は元来三年計画で、広義の意味での文学にかかわる一次資料を可能なかぎり多数収集し、それに基づいて、近代的身体についての文化史研究を精密に行なおうとするものであった。本研究が対象とする資料は、本補助会によって購入し得たもの、それ以外のものを合わせ多にな量にのぼり、全部は整理し切れていないし、未収得のものも多数あるが、現時点で明らかになった点をあげる。人間の身体は決して歴史を超越した「自然」ではない。現在我々が生きている近代的身体は、近代的人間像の形成と共に西欧において18世紀から19世紀にかけて成立したものである。近代的人間像の形成には、教育、医療、モード等に関するものなども含め、広義の文学のディスクールが関与するところが大きい。新しい啓蒙思想の流れのなかで人間(自身また他者)の身体が改めて意識化され、意味づけられ、市民道徳の価値秩序のなかに再統合されてゆく。しかも身体の各部分は一旦身体から切り離され、徳などの非身体的コードで解読される。その際性差が大きく練り直されたが、特に女性の身体は男性にとっての「暗黒大陸」として、新たに発見されては征服されてゆく。この皆後には男性医師による近代医療の進展という事情もある。それにより、月経・妊娠・出産など、女性の身体の健康な変化も、異常なものとして、病や道徳的逸脱という観点から焼き直しされる。身体各部医、しぐさ、ふるまい、衣食住、病、他者との接触など、男女の身体に関するあらゆることに、理性/感情、勤勉/怠惰、はてはドイツ/フランスの対立に至るまで、様々な意味コードが複雑に張りめぐらされている。だが残念ながら現時点では、それらの関係の総体を解明するには至っていず、また未整理の資料も多数あり、独立した研究として発表する段階にはない。今後の継続課題である。

This study is based on the three-year plan of the Yuan Dynasty. It is possible to collect most of the data from the literature, and it is also possible to study the cultural history of the modern body precisely.
